On face value this work looks to be a happy image of a sunny day on the river, but the "Thames Boat Club" where the ebb and flow of the river mirrors the disparities between the haves and the have-nots. The work breathes with a nuanced exploration of privilege and disparity.
At the forefront, the Boat Club stands as a symbol of affluence, of privileges of the fortunate few summed up by the strong use of pinks and black, two colours used often when referring to wealth, "In the Pink" "In the Black"
Look closer and the Boat Club is falling to bits, it looks good at a distance but on closer inspection its fake, to use an old music hall term "all Far Coat and no knickers"
Its days are numbered.
